In the new annual report of the Finck Foundation, we look back on the year 2024 \u2013 and at the same time, we look ahead: towards the future of regenerative agriculture and forestry<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

In addition to the main areas of arable farming, composting, agroforestry, tree nurseries, and animal welfare, you will also find insights into our educational work, nature conservation \u2013 and into the largest research project of the Finck Foundation: DaVaSus<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>

Our food system is partially responsible for climate change, as well as degraded soils and the loss of biodiversity. What we need are resilient ecosystems of healthy soil with good biodiversity to form the basis for nutrient-rich food and secure the future of food production. This means finding forms of land use that are regenerative and do not merely maintain the status quo, but build up soil nutrition, are socially beneficial and economically profitable.\u00a0The Finck Foundation is a non-profit working towards the development of different types of land use.\u00a0<\/p>

The focus is on regenerative land use models, such as syntropic agroforestry, holistic pasture management, composting, and the transformation of monoculture forests into resilient mixed species forests.<\/p>

The core of the foundation’s work is to generate data on the ecological, economic and social effects of these methods. The Finck Foundation is currently focusing on 3.000 hectares of farmland in eastern Brandenburg, Germany. Here the agriculture and forestry suffer with low precipitation and sandy soil. DaVaSus at the Organic Field Days:<\/strong><\/h5>
The Finck Foundation\u2019s largest research project, DaVaSus, presented its work on June 18 and 19, 2025, at the Organic Field Days held at Wassergut Canitz in Saxony. This year\u2019s event focused on water and innovative solutions for both crop production and livestock farming.<\/h5>
At the DaVaSus booth, visitors gained insights into the practical application of digital tools for cow-calf farming and crop cultivation \u2013 including GPS collars for virtual fencing and a handheld spectrometer box for monitoring soil moisture and humus content in the field.<\/h5>

GIZ Visit with 30 International Guests:<\/strong><\/h5>
On May 26, more than 30 agricultural experts from Benin, Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Cameroon, Madagascar, and India visited the 3,000-hectare Living Lab of the Finck Foundation near Berlin. Organized by the GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation) on behalf of the BMZ, this inspiring event focused on exchanging ideas about healthy soils and regenerative agriculture.<\/h5>
Back in December 2024, the Finck Foundation had already welcomed over 70 international experts<\/strong> from agricultural research and policy to the Living Lab. As part of a collaboration with the Julius K\u00fchn-Institute (JKI), the WAKS<\/span><\/strong><\/a> project investigates the effects of our pond renaturation.<\/h5>
Research results show:
“The removal of the waterbody sediment leads, through a lower proportion of emitting sediments and partial depletion of the flooded areas [\u2026], to an initial reduction in CO2 emissions” (Heinz, M. et al. 2024).<\/h5>
Background: In 2022, the Finck Foundation renaturated four field ponds (natural small water bodies in agricultural landscapes) by removing sediments, allowing them to naturally rewet. The Julius K\u00fchn-Institute (JKI) has now published the results from the first year after the renaturation in a poster.<\/h5>

Together with our research partner, the Julius K\u00fchn-Institute (JKI)<\/strong>, we have developed a pioneer study on complex temperate agroforestry systems.<\/h5>
Research design: The study was led by the JKI – with data from our fields. We investigated the topsoil and subsoil microbiome of two complex and innovative alley-cropping systems – a temperate agrosilvopastoral and a syntropic agroforestry system.<\/h5>

As part of our research project “DaVaSus<\/strong>,” a project meeting was held on November 22, 2024, with project team members from the Finck Foundation, JKI, ATB, KTBL and Regaionalwert Leistungen in Alt Madlitz.<\/h5>
The meeting provided a comprehensive overview of the project’s current activities and initial results. As a result, approaches were developed on how research findings can be best made available and presented to the public in 2025.<\/h5>

Benedikt B\u00f6sel is one of 205 selected leaders who are participating in the Obama Foundation Leaders Program.<\/strong> The program trains participants from around the world in leadership development and civic engagement to expand their work in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Benedikt will be one of only 36 leaders taking part in the Leaders Europe Program.<\/span><\/h5>

The Demnitzer M\u00fchlenflie\u00df, parts of which belong to the Finck Foundation’s living lab, has been included in the “Global Network of Ecohydrology Demonstration Sites of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (UNESCO-IHP)”.<\/h5>
We are delighted about this honour and the visibility it brings. Together with the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology (IGB), the Finck Foundation has been investigating how different land use methods affect water availability and groundwater recharge on the land in Alt Madlitz since 2021.
